Baltimore Community Practicum Course and Phase Internships

SOURCE works closely with two courses that provide practical experiences with the state health department, community-based organizations, and local health departments.

MHS/MSPH Internships

Looking to arrange your MHS/MSPH internship with a community-based organization? Capstone project? SOURCE can help. 

As a general rule, SOURCE bases its work on community-identified need, and establishes partnerships with students who have identified an interest in a particular topic area or population. Pre-identified internships require the least amount of up-front legwork on the part of both the student and the community, so we encourage students to plug in to internships that have already been developed and/or identified. Another place to look for possible internships is through faculty at the school.

Speak with your department faculty to find out which faculty members might be looking for additional students for their research projects. You are encouraged to set up a one-on-one appointment with SOURCE staff so we might better assist you in finding an opportunity that meets your needs as well as those of the community (Simply email SOURCE at SOURCE@jhu.edu with your interest and a few dates/times that work for you.)

Certificate in Community-Based Public Health

This certificate will train recipients in the skills and knowledge necessary for community-based public health program development, management and evaluation, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and other research in community settings. It will also train students in the following key competencies for community-based public health practice and research, including: cultural competency skills and attitudes; linking social and environmental causes of disease and community health; community dimensions of practice skills and attitudes. Click here for more information.

Academic Opportunities For Community-Based Learning / Exposure

When combined with preparation and reflection, community service can be a powerful component to academic learning. By responding to community-identified concerns and learning about the context in these issues arise, students are able to fully explore the connection between community involvement and their academic coursework.

SOURCE supports a number of academic courses at the Bloomberg School that have a service-learning component. The number of such academic courses just continues to grow. We support both full service-learning courses and courses that provide community exposure in the form of guest speakers, course content related to urban health, or topics around community engagement and research. "Special Studies" Credit

Students have the option to earn "Special Studies" credit for their independent study and work with a Community-Based organization. In order to earn “Special Studies” academic credit, a faculty member must supervise the student’s learning. Community-Based Internships

There are a number of options available to students who wish to complete an internship with a Community-Based Organization (usually unpaid). Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the SOURCE Weekly Service SCOOP (send a blank email to SOURCE@jhu.edu with "subscribe" in the subject line) to find out about ongoing community-identified internship positions as they become available.

Federal Work-Study Positions

There are a number of options available to students who are Federal Work-Study eligible and wish to work part-time with a community-based organization. Typically, Federal Work-Study positions are advertised from July until October. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the SOURCE Weekly Service SCOOP (send a blank email to SOURCE@jhu.edu with "subscribe" in the subject line) to find out about ongoing Federal Work-Study positions as they become available.
