SOURCE Tri-School Day of Service

Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine

tsdos-s18

Each year, SOURCE holds two Tri-School Days of Service: one in the fall to close out our Baltimore Week celebration, and one in the spring to during our annual National Volunteer Week celebration. Join dozens of other volunteers from the JHU health professional schools and serve our community with one of our SOURCE partner community-based organizations. One morning of volunteer service can truly make a difference!

The Y at Druid Hill | 9:00 a.m. - 1:20 p.m.

Healthy Kids Day | Volunteers will support the "Healthy Kids Day" celebration at the Druid Hill Y. During this celebration, people from across West Baltimore will converge upon the Y for the Fresh Mart food distribution, health-promoting games, resource provision, and community building. Volunteers will be assigned stations throughout the center, for example, leading games for the children, operating a bouncy house, distributing food in the pantry, helping with breakdown/set up, and preparing food. This event attracts a large audience from across the neighborhood and is best compared to a block party. Its importance to the community is manifold: building community, providing much needed anti-hunger work, and connecting with Community Health Workers. The van will leave from BSPH (Monument St. entrance) promptly at 9:10 am and will return to campus by 1:20 pm.

*NOTE: This project involves working with youth, and volunteers must complete the JHU Child Safety Training (titled Protecting Youth: Abuse and Neglect Prevention) ahead of time. Online modules take approximately 30 minutes. You will be emailed instructions upon registering for this shift.

Amazing Grace Lutheran Church | 9:15 a.m. - 12:35 p.m.

Community Green Space Upkeep | In this group service project, volunteers will assist with the maintenance of the Port Street Commons, a vibrant community green space in the McElderry Park neighborhood. The Commons provide a space for mindfulness, recreation, and environmental education through the labyrinth and gardens. Tasks for volunteers will include turning over soil for a new garden bed, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and other garden tasks. The van will leave from BSPH (Monument St. entrance) promptly at 9:25 am and will return to campus by 12:35 pm. Project Leader: Dr. Marie Diener-West

Gallagher Services | 9:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.

Gardening with Clients | This is a group home for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are supported by Gallagher Services to live as independently as possible. Volunteers will help the people we support to clean up the garden and do some Spring planting with them. Materials provided for weeding, mulching and planting. It's a great opportunity for the people supported to engage with students and complete a project where they live. The van will leave from BSPH (Monument St. entrance) promptly at 9:40 am and will return to campus by 12:20 pm.

The Family Recovery Program | 9:45 a.m. - 2:05 p.m.

Gardening and Community Cleanup | The Family Recovery Program, Inc. successfully supports the family reunification process by offering specialized programs to meet the recovery and life skill needs of the parents. They currently need help planting seasonal flowers in the front and back yards, and painting of a fence. The van will leave from BSPH (Monument St. entrance) promptly at 9:45 am and will return to campus by 2:05 pm.
