SOURCE's mission is to engage the Johns Hopkins University health professional schools and Baltimore communities in mutually beneficial partnerships that promote health and social justice.
Our Values
Reciprocity – To exchange with others for mutual benefit

Service – To be of service to others

Our Commitment to Social Justice
In 2018 SOURCE finalized a Social Justice Strategic Plan which serves as a guidance to intentional and strategic social justice orientation in SOURCE’s work. Over 12 months, a group of students, faculty, and staff from the JHU Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine, and community stakeholders, committed to a yearlong plan development process. The process created a three year strategic plan, to guide SOURCE’s team in effectively implementing and measuring the success of this enhanced social justice approach. Read the plan and more about the process here.
History
SOURCE was founded by the three schools on the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions campus—Bloomberg School of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine —in January 2005 to create one centralized, interdisciplinary community engagement and service-learning center. The center was formed in order to coordinate the community engagement activities of the three schools while reducing unnecessary duplication of effort and services.
SOURCE serves as a recognizable clearinghouse for requests from community agencies for involvement activities and as a focal point for students, faculty and staff seeking exposure in an urban environment. SOURCE is also available to expand resources for faculty interested in service-learning and community-based interdisciplinary research, education and practice.
Location
SOURCE is located in the Bloomberg School of Public Health building (615 N. Wolfe St) on the 1st floor, Suite W1600. To locate our suite, enter through the Wolfe St. entrance of the building, and take an immediate right. Walk to the end of the hall, then turn left. The door to our suite is straight ahead at the end of the hall.
Gain Practical Experience
SOURCE is viewed as a vital component of Student and Academic Affairs in all three schools—Bloomberg School of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine. Students are encouraged to utilize our services in order to gain practical experience in their field of study. Such experiences are key elements of students' resumes or CVs.
More information regarding career goals and resume enhancement can be obtained through the Professional Development Office (all three Schools), Career Resource Center (Nursing only) and Career Services (Bloomberg School only).
