Thread
About the Organization
Thread is a community impact organization that leverages the power of relationships to support students through graduation and beyond. Thread enrolls the lowest-performing ninth-grade students at the lowest-performing schools in Baltimore City who face an abundance of challenges in and out of the classroom. We connect them with small groups of volunteers—from millennials and retirees, to college students and PhD candidates, working professionals and empty nesters, to lifelong residents and transplants—to build relationships and support one another in achieving their academic, professional and personal goals.
Thread’s extensive network of programs and partnerships help our community overcome barriers, creating a layered system of support. Together, we’re creating a more equitable city where everyone can thrive.

Involvement Opportunities
Are you looking to meet new friends and build a better Baltimore? If so, consider volunteering for Thread.
Volunteering with Thread can take many forms, but most of our volunteers work directly with Thread student(s) and other volunteers to form an extended network of care and support around the student and each other. This may include rides to school, homework and resume help, discussion of career options, or just hanging out. If you would do it for a family member or friend, we do it in Thread.
Complete a short volunteer application form here or reach out to our Volunteer Recruitment team to get started.
Both Johns Hopkins Homewood and Johns Hopkins Medical Institute have Thread Clubs on campus. It’s a great way to start connecting and building community with other students on campus. Reach out to the club presidents listed below to get involved.
