Cornerstone Community Housing
About the Organization
Cornerstone Community Housing (CCH) is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in 1993. CCH was the vision of Rev. Eugene Bartell and volunteers at The Supper Club, a feeding program at First United Evangelical UCC, and was inspired by Earl Johnson, a guest at The Supper Club. Earl and other guests put a human face on “homelessness,” raising awareness of the urgent need for not only food, but also safe and stable housing.
Recognizing that lasting change required more than meals alone, Earl’s Place, a transitional housing program for men, opened in December 1997. Although Earl did not live to see the results of his inspiration, his legacy lives on through the many men who have found stability, dignity, and hope through the program.
Located in Baltimore City, Earl’s Place provides transitional housing and supportive services to 17 men at a time, serving approximately 30–35 men annually as they work toward personal goals related to housing stability, health, and independence.
Building on this foundation, CCH expanded its mission with Prospect Place, a permanent supportive housing program in Baltimore County grounded in a Housing First approach. Prospect Place serves individuals with the highest barriers to housing stability by offering safe, affordable housing paired with voluntary, person-centered supportive services. Together, Earl’s Place and Prospect Place reflect CCH’s continuum of care, meeting people where they are and supporting both short-term transitions and long-term housing stability.
