About the Organization

Banner Neighborhoods is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting residents in their efforts to enhance the quality of life throughout 10 southeast Baltimore communities. We offer a wide variety of programs designed to strengthen the community, ranging from youth activities, to senior home maintenance, to beautification projects.

Involvement Opportunities

Volunteers are needed to work with the Home Maintenance Program and Neighborhood Youth Employment Program. There are ongoing opportunities with each program.

Home Maintenance Program

This program provides minor home maintenance repairs to allow our clients (living in South East Baltimore) to safely age in place.  Currently the program provides services for 130 older adult home owners living in South East Baltimore.  This program will provide volunteers with the opportunity to work with providing services and program satisfaction of older adults living in an urban setting. There are two primary jobs for volunteers on this program - 1.) Survey of Clients and  2.) Ongoing Telephone Outreach and Process Evaluation.  

 Specific tasks for each job is listed below:

Survey of clients (short term activity- 2 years)

  • Review/revise existing survey materials
  • Conduct Surveys (in-person at Banner or over the phone)
  • Compile Results

Telephone outreach (ongoing long term activities)           

  • Develop a protocol, and/or when necessary provide suggestions for modifications, for reviewing call data for program process evaluation
  • Review data compiled by follow-up calls to determine the types of services commonly requested, participants satisfaction of services, and suggestions for program changes/improvements
  • Contribute to grant and report writing related to the Home Maintenance Program
  • Call seniors- Follow up after services are provided and to determine if the client requires additional service or has other concerns/issues that needs to be addressed
  • Compile and update (as needed) a resource list to help older adults – including health services, taxes, and other social services

Neighborhood Youth Employment Program (NYEP)

The NYEP has been in existence for over 20 years and is designed to provide opportunities in the summer for Baltimore City youth. Currently this program is designed as a 6-week summer employment and job-training program. This program includes 20 hours a week of work for youth 16-21 divided into working outside in a community gardens and providing tree maintenance in South East Baltimore in the morning and life skills training in the afternoon. The life skills program includes SAT preparation,  field trips to colleges and universities, financial literacy, and other skills for transitioning out of high school.

There are two primary jobs for volunteers interested in working with the NYEP - 1.) Evaluation of the program and 2.) Program planning and process measure development and evaluation.

Specific tasks for both jobs are listed below:

Evaluation of the program (short term 2 years)

  • Conduct a pre/post assessment with youth about the enrichment program experience
  • Compile the results of pre/post assessments
  • Assist with the development of a long term tracking tool for youth after completion of the program
  • Assist with the development of a long term evaluation plan for youth outcomes

Program Planning (Ongoing)

  • Create/revise measures for the enrichment program including fidelity measures of activities and youth impact measures
  • Review process measures data for the enrichment program including fidelity measures of activities and youth impact measures
  • Work to create an enrichment schedule for youth which requires at least one field trip per week (calling agencies for to talk with youth, setting up a schedule of the activities, suggesting activities, and organizing activities)
  • Organize JHU Peabody community institute collaboration –(setting up the dates and planning the day events)
  •  (optional) Participating in delivering enrichment programs to youth in the summer
