SPARC has two sub-committees, one focused on mobilizing JHSPH students, faculty and staff to engage with the East Baltimore Community, and one focused on supporting the development of community-based curriculum at JHSPH, with training opportunities in the East Baltimore community. SPARC is a co-sponsor of Baltimore Week, an annual week-long JHSPH event which features the city where we live, work and study, and explores the relationship between our institution and the community.
What's Poverty Got To Do With It? Structural Poverty in Baltimore City
February 1, 2007 at JHSPH. Ralph E. Moore, Director of the St. Frances Academy Community Center led a discussion among faculty, students, and community members about poverty in Baltimore, and needed collaboration between JHSPH and the East Baltimore community.
In Our Own Backyard: Demolition, Relocation, and Urban Renewal in Baltimore
December 8, 2005, at JHSPH. This panel discussion and screening of the film, "Voices from Within: A Displaced Community Speaks Out", featured academics, community activists, and developers discussing the redevelopment project in East Baltimore. Organized with leadership from members of the SPARC Executive Commitee, this panel led to the creation of SPARC.
